Asana and Pranayama in Context

A Workshop with Brian Hogencamp

Thursday, September 24 – Sunday, September 27

One evening, prior to her Pranayama class at RIMYI, Geeta S. Iyengar gave a background to one of Guruji’s teachings that relates the eight aspects of yoga – ashtanga yoga – to the restraint of fluctuations – vrtti nirodha. You may know the eight aspects of yoga as yama, niyama, asana, pranayama, pratyahara, dharana, dhyana, and samadhi. In her talk, Geetaji explained:

“You can understand them compartmentally in theory. But to follow yama, you need niyama. To follow yama and niyama you need to do asana; to follow yama, niyama, and asana, you need to do pranayama and so on.”

Geeta summarizes, “All the eight aspects of ashtanga yoga are there in every single aspect of ashtanga yoga and every single aspect is in ashtanga.

With the theoretical background from Geetaji’s talk as our inspiration, we will explore asana and pranayama in their context of the eight aspects of yoga. Our aim will be to weave experiential knowledge with theoretical background for inspired continuity in practice. We will look into how the body responds to the breath, and the breath to the body. And the sequential order of learning pranayama to avoid pitfalls and provide a stable ground for the effects of practice to happen.

Workshop Schedule

Thursday

9:00 – 11:00 AM Asana Class

These morning asana classes are appropriate for continuing beginner and intermediate students. As such they are an opportunity for our students currently taking level 1-2 and 2-3 classes to work with a Senior teacher and progressively deepen their practice over the three morning sessions.

3:00 – 6:00 PM Afternoon Intermediate Topic

These afternoon sessions are for intermediate level students, students mentoring with a Certified Iyengar Yoga Teacher (CIYT), and CIYTs of all levels who are keen to learn, share, and help each other. Each session will build upon the morning class and include a mix of theory discussion, asana as it relates to pranayama, observation/correction skills, the sequential order of learning pranayama, and pranayama.
