In Loving Memory

The Mary Ann Dunn Scholarship Fund

“Support Others”
“Practice Kindness”
“Make Time”

Mary Ann Dunn, a member of our community embodied yoga, particularly the yama, aparigraha, non-greed. She was generous with the time and support she gave to the studio. It is in her honor and memory that we are establishing this scholarship fund as it exemplifies some of her core karmic principles:

“Support others, practice kindness, make time.”

BKS Iyengar’s thoughts on non-hoarding, aparigraha:

Aparigraha is non-covetousness, modesty in life. Energy needs to flow or its sources withers. By covetousness or miserly clinging on, we stop energy from flowing, from creating more energy, and eventually….it is we who are impoverished and poisoned by our own hoarding of life’s riches.”

“Know your Principles”
“Live your Values”
“Articulate Your Dream”

It was Mary Ann Dunn who said we needed to put the yamas and niyamas on the walls in the studio. Then she went and got the posters done herself. She felt that for the studio to thrive we needed to know our values and articulate them so we could work toward living them to build a strong community.

B.K.S. Iyengar’s words on the Yamas and the Niyamas:

The journey starts with the five universal moral commandments (yama). We learn in this way to develop control over our actions in the external world. The journey continues with five steps of self-purification (niyama).  These ethical precepts are always with us from the beginning to the end of the yoga journey, for the demonstration of one’s spiritual realization lies in none other than how one walks and interacts with one’s fellow human beings.”

Your donation to the scholarship fund will be used to support a student who otherwise would not be able to attend classes and/or workshops.
